Toetje=Sierra Nevada/Postre= Sierra Nevada/Dessert=Sierra Nevada

🇳🇱Wij wisten dat dit jaar er uitzonderlijk veel sneeuw is gevallen in Californië, dus ook in de Sierra. Vanaf het begin is dit onze zorg geweest. “Wat gaan jullie doen?” was een vraag die iedereen stelde en gesteld kreeg. Op Social media was en is de situatie in de Sierra het meest besproken onderwerp. Hoe is de sneeuwconditie, hoe zwaar en gevaarlijk is het daarboven, hoe snel smelt het, hoeveel smeltwater is er al? Heel veel vragen waarop geen objectieve antwoorden zijn. Onder welke condities iemand wil lopen en hoeveel risico’s iemand bereid is te nemen is een persoonlijke beslissing. Wij hebben in ieder geval besloten om op dit moment het stuk van de Sierra over te slaan. Op basis van verhalen, foto’s, video’s van mensen die wel de Sierra in gaan lijkt het ons niet verstandig om dit te doen. Het idee aan die hopen sneeuw die ook op steile hellingen onder je voeten vandaan kunnen smelten zorgt bij mij voor slapeloze nachten. Denken aan de kracht van het smeltwater die een weg zoekt en sterke stromingen vormt waar wij doorheen moeten geeft mij nachtmerries. Het was geen makkelijke beslissing. Het voelt vreemd om het pad in een andere volgorde te lopen. Het was niet leuk om afscheid te nemen van aardigen mensen die wij meer dan een maand dagelijks tegenkwamen. Sommigen gaan wel in de Sierra lopen en anderen hebben er voor gekozen om vanuit een ander punt op het pad verder te gaan in de noordelijke of zuidelijke richting. Wij hebben een auto gehuurd en zijn nu onderweg naar Old Station. Dit ligt ongeveer 1.000km ten noorden, in Noord Californië. Daarvandaan willen wij naar het Noorden lopen, 2.000 km tot Canada. Daarna weer terug om de laatste 1.000km in de Sierra Nevada te lopen. Ja, de Sierra wordt ons toetje!!
🇪🇸Ya sabíamos que este año ha sido un año excepcional, cayó muchísima nieve en California por lo cual también en la Sierra. Desde el principio esto ha sido nuestra preocupación. “¿Qué vais a hacer?” Era una pregunta que todos hacían y otros se la hacían. En las redes sociales, la situación en la Sierra era y es el tema más discutido. ¿Cuál es la condición de la nieve, es muy dura y peligrosa la situación allí arriba, se derrite muy rápido, cuánta agua de deshielo hay? Muchas preguntas a las que no hay respuestas objetivas. Bajo que condiciones alguien quiere caminar y cuanto riesgo está dispuesto a asumir es una decisión personal. De todas formas nosotros hemos decidido no entrar en la Sierra ahora. Basándonos en historias, fotos, videos de otros que entraron, no lo consideramos prudente. La idea de que enormes montones de nieve se puedan derretir bajo los pies en pendientes pronunciadas me quita el sueño. Pensar con que fuerza el agua de deshielo busca su camino y forma fuertes corrientes que tenemos que atravesar me da pesadillas. No fue una decisión fácil. Es extraño caminar el camino en diferente orden. No fue agradable despedirnos de simpáticas personas que nos encontramos todos los días durante más de un mes. Algunos seguirán su camino por la Sierra y otros han optado por continuar en en otro punto en dirección norte o sur. Hemos alquilado un coche y en estos momentos vamos en dirección de Old Station. Esto es aproximadamente 1.000 km hacia el norte en el norte de California. Desde allí queremos seguir caminando hacia el norte, 2.000 km, hasta Canadá. Luego volveremos para recorrer los últimos 1.000 km en la Sierra Nevada, Sí, ¡la sierra será nuestro postre !!
🇬🇧We knew that this has been an exceptional snow year in California and thus in the Sierra. From the start this has been our concern “What are you going to do?” Was a question everyone asked and was asked. On social media, the situation in the Sierra was and is the most discussed topic. How are the snow conditions, how tough and dangerous is it up there, how fast does it melt, how much melt water is there? Many questions to which there are no objective answers. Under what conditions someone is prepared to hike and how many risks someone is willing to take is a personal decision. Anyway, we have decided to skip the Sierra section for now. Based on stories, photos, videos from people who do enter the Sierra, we don’t think that for us it would be a wise thing to do. The idea that a huge pile of snow could melt away from under your feet on steep slopes gives me sleepless nights. Just thinking of the force of the melt water that seeks a way and forms strong currents that we have to cross gives me nightmares. It was not an easy decision. It feels strange to walk the trail in a different order. We didn’t like to say goodbye to nice people we met every day for over a month. Some will enter the Sierra and others have chosen to continue in a northerly or southerly direction from another point on the trail. We have rented a car and are on our way to Old Station now. This is approximately 1,000 km to the north in Northern California. From there we want to walk North, 2.000 km (1280mi) to Canada. Then back again to hike last 1,000 km in the Sierra Nevada. Yes, the Sierra will be our dessert !!
